Mccallum's parents wanted him to pursue a career in music, because he was very good at playing the oboe. However, that wasn't mean to be his chosen path in life, and in 1946 he started doing boy voices for the BBC Radio repetory company. He also did some local amateur drama too, at age of 17, which was the signal of what was to be the official start of his acting career.
He started taking bit parts in a lot of British films during the late 1950s. One of his early roles in film was as a juvenile delinquent in the movie called Violent playground. He also got a part as an outlaw in Robbery Under Arms and as a junior RMS Titanic radio operator Harold Bride in A Night To Remember. He is best known for his role as Illya Kuryakin, who was a Russian-born secret agent in the very popular television series from the 60's called Man From U.N.C.L.E.
